Currently, Curiosity is still on its way to Mount Sharp, and various scientific research tasks such as geological drilling need to be performed on the way. Mount Sharp is a mountain within Gale crater, rising 5,500 meters high from the valley floor. It may have been formed by the sediment deposits on large lake beds billions of years ago. Humans have discovered this mountain as early as the 1970s, but the mountain remained unnamed for nearly 40 years, and until Gale crater became a candidate landing site, the mountain was given various labels. e.g. in 2010, a NASA photo caption called it "Gale crater mound". On May 16, 2012, the mountain was officially named "Aeolis Mons" by the International Astronomical Union(IAU). And "Mount Sharp" is its unofficial name, to pay tribute after American geologist Robert P. Sharp. He is a founder of planetary science and an influential teacher in the field.
